A mammogram is a special x-ray examination of the breast made with specific equipment that can often detect tumours too small to be felt. A dedicated machine to perform mammograms is better than a typical x-ray machine as the dose is reduced, the equipment is optimised to get the best image of the breasts, and the image is of a much higher definition.
Mammograms are an important tool used by doctors to diagnose, evaluate, and follow breast cancer. This highly accurate technique has been in use for about thirty years.
Mammograms do not prevent breast cancer, but the prognosis for women with breast cancer is related to how early it is found. Mammography is the most efficient tool for this. Early detection also means that many more women with cancer are able to avoid a full mastectomy and have wider choice for their treatment options.
At Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals we offer a rapid access one-stop diagnosis process thereby minimising stress and anxiety that may otherwise occur through waiting for appointments.
A ‘one-stop’ integrated breast clinic is now available at the Nuffield Health Cardiff Bay Hospital. Patients can be seen for a specialist consultation, which includes a mammogram and an ultrasound. The results of the imaging and consultation
are all explained at one visit. With the introduction of the latest Full Field
Digital Mammography unit, Nuffield Health Cardiff Bay Hospital offers the
one-stop breast clinic twice a week with Mr Sumit Goyal, consultant
oncoplastic surgeon and Dr Philippa Young, consultant radiologist.
Mammography is available at the Cardiff Bay Hospital.
